The building industry IN THE AGE OF INFORMATION AND AUTOMATION

The world is fast-changing. Information systems, automation and robotics are infiltrating every sector of the supply chain in our “information world”. There is a movement to increase the value of services by increasing their efficiency and effectiveness. The FM Industry professionals must adapt to the new age of information and automation. Dr. Dean proposes the only way for the “FM Professional of the Future” to do this is by identifying and utilizing expertise to cut cost and dominantly increase performance. The new way is called the Best Value Approach. He proposes that experts think less and make minimal decisions, resulting in cost and schedule savings. They can see from beginning to end, and assist thosestakeholders who cannot see upfront, to see into the future which results in the minimization of risk.

 

The “FM Professional of the Future” is a different paradigm from the traditional FM industry professional. They affect the entire supply chain by bringing efficiency, simplicity and transparency to an organization. The FM industry Professional of the Future must learn the new paradigm, vocabulary and actions to adapt to the future.

Dean T. Kashiwagi, PhD, PE, IFMA Fellow Director, Adjunct Professor, Professional Engineer Adjunct Professor at SKEMA Business School

World renowned researcher in best value. Dr. Dean has developed a “hands off” approach to managing contractors or vendors in any industry. His concept is contrary to the traditional price-driven procurement model. It reduces the transactions of every participant and forces a "win-win" relationship. His program educates and assists partners in becoming a more efficient organization through measurement, accountability and transparency. He is the creator of the Best Value Approach (BVA).

Dr. Kashiwagi has presented at 200+ national and international organizations, and 100+ conferences. He has been in theindustry for 25+ years researching and developing a project management technology that has been tested 2000+ times totaling $6.6 Billion ($4.4 Billion in construction projects and $2.2B in non- construction projects) with a 98% success rate since 1994 in 7 different countries and 32 states. It is the most licensed technology at Arizona State University with 62 licenses. Dr. Kashiwagi has published 360+ books, publications and journal papers on his research. His many achievements include 2012 Dutch Sourcing Award for best overall procurement effort and operational excellence, 2011 Silver Award from NASPO, and 2009 Excellence Educator Award for his numerous accomplishments in education and research (established Best Value programs at six universities around the world). He is a recipient of the Fulbright Scholar Award due to the establishment of a state-of-the-art procurement process and project management research and practices with the people of Botswana, Africa.

Dean’s groundbreaking research in project management has been integrated in graduate programs around the world. Hecontinues to educate and prepare the next generation of professionals at the project management graduate program at the SKEMA Business School in Lille, France. He is responsible for changing the way the Netherlands government purchases and manages services in their country (first tests were on 1.5B Euros infrastructure project). Dr. Dean was a previous Project Engineer for the US Air Force during his 14 years of military service. He is married to his beautiful wife, Judy Kashiwagi, andis the father of 8 children.
